Noll, Peralta, Clark, and George coming to “SLO”!
“Riding Giants” stars/creators to be special guests for a red carpet screening of the film at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival on March 9.
San Luis Obispo, California – The idyllic enclave of San Luis Obispo is renown for it’s verdant oak-crusted hills, world-class wines, seemingly endless coastline, sprawling ranches, and timeless, retro-California vibe. But there’s a world-class film festival in “SLO”? And one of the prime events for this year’s festival is a screening of the phenomenal surfing documentary “Riding Giants”, with personal appearances by legendary North Shore surfing pioneer Greg Noll, brilliant director/co-writer Stacy Peralta, Mavericks virtuoso Jeff Clark, and superb wordsmith, co-writer Sam George? For real? Yeah – for real!
So, how do the Riding Giants guys feel about having a Riding Giants “reunion”? Greg Noll - “It was so cool to tour with all these guys on the Sony tour promoting Riding Giants – guys like Laird, Gerry Lopez, Jeff, Stacy, Derrick, Dave Kalama, Sam, and many others. My wife Laura goes with me everywhere, and we’re both way excited to hang out with some of the Riding Giants group again!” Stacy Peralta – “We had this unreal chemistry for the making and promoting of Riding Giants. I’m really stoked for another chance to renew that bond!” Jeff Clark and Sam George feel the same way. Laird Hamilton would come to SLO, but prior obligations will keep him in another part of the world.
How can such a small community on the California Central Coast draw such luminaries to a film festival? Greg Noll – “Me and Laura love the San Luis Obispo area! When I owned my fishing boat, we used to fish occasionally out of Port San Luis and Morro Bay. We came real close to moving there, but ended up staying on the Northern California coast”. Stacy Peralta – “San Luis Obispo is an awesome area! I’ve spent tons of time there since the mid-‘70’s, surfing, exploring, and just experiencing the beauty of the area”. Jeff Clark – “I’ve spent a lot of time on the Central Coast over the years. It’ll be great get back there for a few days!” Sam George – “It completes a circle in my life to come back to my SLO-area roots. One day in 1975, I was hitchhiked down a country road near SLO with my surfboard. An old truck with a couple guys had mercy on me and gave me a ride. One of those guys was Stacy Peralta! To come full circle in 2006, back to SLO with my longtime friend Stacy, and my other close Riding Giants friends, will be a euphoric experience!
So, who hooked this Riding Giants reunion up? Steve Gibby. He is a lifelong surfer (since ’59), an Emmy-winning television producer/director, has been heavily involved with international and national surfing television production since 1981, is a longtime friend of each of the Riding Giants guys, lives on the coast near SLO, has surfing roots on the Central Coast that reach way back to the ‘60’s, went to high school with Laird’s dad (Bill Hamilton), and is a member of the Board of Directors for the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. Steve Gibby – “When I joined the festival Board, they were looking for good ways to bring in world-quality films that represent some of the diverse cultures and demographics of the Central Coast. Surfing is such a core culture of the Central Coast – and Riding Giants is, in my professional estimation, the finest surfing documentary ever made. When I considered that I knew all the stars/makers of the film, knew they had deep SLO roots and fond memories of the area, felt I could get them here in person, that part of the film features Mavericks, which is just over three hours north of SLO, and many other factors, it was such a “no-brainer” to propose it to the SLOIFF Board. The Board wholeheartedly leaped onto the bandwagon, and now this has grown into what will undoubtedly be a thoroughly ecstatic time for everyone. Bring it on!”
So, where’s it at, and what’s happening? Riding Giants will screen in San Luis Obispo on Thursday March 9. The group will be living large at one of the quality resorts of the Boutique Hotel Collection (http://www.boutiquehotelcollection.com/), Stardust Cruises (http://www.stardustcruises.com) has stepped up to provide a great ride for the evening – a bright red, double stretch, ’32 Ford Model A limo! After an exclusive pre-screening reception at the beautiful Mission Grill (http://www.missiongrill.com/default.html), the group will take a short limo ride to a red carpet arrival at the historic Fremont Theater, and television interviews there with NBC-affiliate station KSBY-TV (http://www.ksby.com ). Be sure to catch a feature newspaper article in The Tribune on March 9, written by Pat Pemberton, about the Riding Giants group and the screening of the film (http://www.sanluisobispo.com/mld/sanluisobispo/ ). The screening will feature 800 rabid surfing fans, a stockpile of cool raffle items donated by SLO-area surf shops (surfboards, etc.), the best surfing documentary ever made, and an interactive Question/Answer session after the screening, where the audience can ask Greg, Stacy, Jeff, and Sam about Riding Giants, and the new projects each of them have cooking! If you’re old enough to have gone to surf movie screenings in the ‘50’s, ‘60’s, and ‘70’s, this will be “nostalgia heaven” for you, because we will be recapturing the style and stoke of those times! Isn’t it about time someone did this again?!?
There are some tickets remaining for the screening – step up and get some, or miss a landmark occurrence in this unique gathering of the surfing community! Grab your chance to meet the legends and creators of Riding Giants – or forever hear about how cool it was from your friends that went…
If you’re simply craving some added “surf stoke” after experiencing Riding Giants, and meeting the guys, the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival proudly presents a screening of the surfing documentary “Sophia” at the nearby Palm Theater shortly after the Riding Giants screening festivities end! Sophia is a quality documentary featuring 2004 ASP Women’s World Surfing Champion Sophia Mulanovich of Peru, including tracing her rise from poverty to domination in women’s professional surfing.
Also, check out the huge variety of other films screening at the festival, film workshops, competition films from around the world, and the opportunity to see some of the international film celebrities coming to the festival in person: Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, Oscar-winning editor Neil Travis (Dances With Wolves), award-winning director Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams), actor Keith Carradine, and many more.
